Recently I’ve been trying new skincare products. I was not looking to change my skincare routine, but it just happened that I recently accumulated new products and samples! I always feel like there are too many skincare products on the market, and it can be very overwhelming roaming through the aisles of Ulta or Sephora! Hence the title, “Swimming in a Sea of Products!” My philosophy is trial and error. I realize not everyone wants to be a product guinea big, but I will! I decided to round up all my new product experiences in skincare and share my findings.
These products may not be new to you from LUSH and Beautycounter, but they are to me. First, I have been into LUSH many times but never purchased anything because again I was too overwhelmed by all the choices and didn’t know what to get! Thanks to my co-worker and beauty expert, Nicole, I was lead to the Fresh Cupcake Face Mask.
Fresh Face Masks can only be purchased in a LUSH store because they are just that…FRESH! They last about 2 weeks and must be refrigerated. LUSH prides itself on selling “fresh, handmade cosmetics.” Don’t read into that too much. Yes, it makes their products unique but beware! It’s also a marketing trick.
Cupcake Mask Review
The mask goes on smoothly and feels thick. I left it on for 15 minutes as directed for it to dry. Then with a wash cloth and warm water the mask came off easily leaving my face soft and smooth. It removed the daily dirt and grim from my face, but I wouldn’t say it’s a “deep” cleanser. If you’re looking for a natural cleanser that’s not harsh on the skin this is a great option. I know scrubs may sound promising but DO NOT use them! Scrubs are too harsh and break down your skin making it more vulnerable to scarring and clogging. (Later, I suggest a scrub alternative). In all, the Cupcake Mask leaft my face feeling super smooth and refreshed!
The time I felt my skin received the deepest cleanse was with a Microderm treatment at a dermatologist. The expert who performed the procedure transformed how I take care of my skin…thank goodness!
Aqua Marina Cleanser Review
LUSH is awesome because you can choose to sample anything when you make a purchase. I tried out the Aqua Marina Cleanser, which is always available online and in store. Personally, I won’t buy this, for I didn’t notice a difference or added benefit. I really want to try the Mask of Magnaminty next! I am new to LUSH, so I appreciate any suggestions.
Another beauty brand I have heard and seen a lot about recently is Beautycounter. It’s a direct selling brand of cosmetics. I am late to trying it out because I didn’t know anyone who sold it. However, that has recently changed! I got the chance to sample three products from a Beautycounter Educator when I least expected it! Heather, presented BC at a Pure Barre open house I attended in Fort Myers. I was super excited to finally see BC first hand! The bonus of course being samples! Heather gave me a moisturizer, serum and mask.
Oh my goodness…WOW is all I can say. I have tried hundreds of masks in my lifetime, and this is hands down my favorite. It goes on smoothly and leaves my face feeling like butter. My “beef” with facial masks is they feel good but often do not do put out results or improve my skin. Not the case with the NO 3. Balancing Facial Mask. The mask left my face feeling like butter! I also noticed my skin was brighter and more clear. Lastly, it does not leave my skin feeling overly dry.
Countermatch Adaptive Moisturizer
The moisturizer is lightweight and does not lay heavy on my skin, yet it still provides instant moisture and hydration. Sometimes I find that moisturizers have to be thick and heavy to provide long-lasting moisture and hydration, but that’s not this case with Countermatch Adaptive, at least for me.
Overnight Resurfacing Peel
The Overnight Resurfacing Peel is a new BC product. I enjoyed using it, but truthfully saw no change in my skin or added benefit. However, it may be a product you need to use for longer to see results. I think the peel is formulated for more mature women worried about fine lines and wrinkles. I am a firm believer that just because something does not work for one doesn’t mean it can’t work for someone else!
New(ish) Products-My Regime
About two months ago I sorted through all my lotions and potions. I ditched the harmful astringents, perfumed moisturizers, and harsh scrubs. At one time I thought those products were good for my skin. Thankfully, I know now the best way to take care of your skin is with gentle products, without alcohol, and minimal ingredients. Also, moisture, hydration and SPF are key!
I hardly wear make up, and I avoid foundation at all costs. It clogs my pores too easily. However, I still want the benefits of an even skin tone provided by a foundation or coverup. That’s why I use a tinted facial sunscreen! It’s the Elta MD on the left side of the photo. If I could only pick one cosmetic to keep it would be this, which I have been using for over a year. My mom uses it too. It’s highly recommended and sold at our dermatologists’s office. If you’re a loyal foundation user it comes untinted too.
I am a huge fan of facial cleansing wipes. They’re extremely convenient and effective, especially on the days I do wear make up. I did some research and consulted a few skincare experts and decided Burt’s Bee’s is right for me. It’s not overly priced or hard to find at a grocery store like here from Target. Depending on when I take a shower I use the Burt’s Bee’s fascial cleanser to remove excess dirt and oil.
Now, let’s talk hydration! Shamefully it took me 19 years to discover the reason my pores would not clear up is because they were too dry to let anything out. I know, probably really gross and TMI. I moisturize twice a day with the product in the center of the photo above. A good moisturizer should be gentle, alcohol free, and preferably unscented. Again this is recommended by my dermatologists office.
Exfoliators: How to properly use
Exfoliators! The product every girl loves because it feels so good to scrub your face, and we want to believe exfoliators are scrubbing away all our skin concerns. The reality is exfoliators are harsh and damaging. They take away protecting layers of your skin and dry it out. This exposes your skin, making it easier for dirt to enter.
I have issues with keeping my pores clear around my nose. Not all exfoliators or scrubs are bad if formulated right, but so many people get the ones with beads in them. Do me a favor if you use a scrub with exfoliating “beads” pitch it NOW! For an extra clarification boost I alternate between the two scrubs above. I exfoliate 1-2 times a week at most with the Deep Poor Scrub. The Pore Refining Scrub is more intense, so I use every other week. I always follow up with my moisturizer and Rejuvinique oil to restore hydration and brilliance.
Oil is Essential
Anytime you use a mask, scrub, or exfoliator you are drying out your skin. To balance out the drying element you need to restore intense moisture with a facial oil. Lotion is not enough.
Essential oils are exactly that…essential! The hydrating element most women are missing is oil. The benefits of adding oil to your skin (and hair) is scientifically proven. Side note, this oil smells like the freshest bottle of limoncello ever! The smell alone is worth the oil.
So how do you use it? You can add the oil directly to your face from the bottle. I like to add a few drops to my favorite, fragrance-free lotion then rub on my face. I find it goes on smoother. In the winter, lotion isn’t enough to prevent my hands from chapping , so I use Rejuvinique oil!
